In this case study, we’ll explore how HEAL’s workplace wellness program helped consumer packaged goods company, Earth’s Own, with a team-building challenge for their employees that resulted in 100% engagement throughout the program along with improved connection, well-being and camaraderie.
Burnaby, BC-based Earth’s Own Foods has been making plant-based beverages before the hashtag was trending.
For more than 20 years, the team at Earth’s Own has been living the plant-based life, championing community programs like the Plant Project, because they believe in the power of plants to change the world. With a unique desire to take a stand and encourage Canadians to choose plant-based to protect the environment, Earth’s Own is on a relentless pursuit to change the world through plants.
Earth’s Own offers a variety of totally vegan, non-GMO and 100% plant-based products ranging from Oat to Almond. Their voted best tasting award winning flavours and oh so-creamy texture take oat and almond milk to the next level.
Earth’s Own reached out to HEAL this spring to collaborate on a team-building initiative. A small group of their employees were looking to enhance culture and engagement. They wanted to run a program that provided a culture boost. Post-COVID, their team is now spread across the country with ⅓ of the team remote and they wanted to feel more connected and ensure they were a cohesive team, coast to coast. As a small team of 32, they wanted to ensure everyone knew each other and connected across various departments.
The HEAL Wellness Challenge originated specifically as a wellness program but has now become a hybrid between a wellness program and a team-building program. Employees participate in teams of 4-5 people, and while the majority of the daily challenges are individual tasks, each week there are some team challenges to complete. Earth’s Own decided to intentionally create the teams so that employees who don’t typically interact with each other were together. This is a fantastic way to create new team connections across an organization.
“It gave an opportunity to connect with colleagues on a different level.”

There were a few factors that made this challenge so successful. Firstly, Earth’s Own had designated a couple of director-level employees to champion this program. The HEAL Wellness Challenge is a hands-off program for organizers, but it helps to have a few influential voices drumming up excitement internally.
In addition to having internal support and excitement, we were able to host an in-person kickoff the week before it started while all employees were in-person for their annual company-wide meeting. This 30-minute event is hosted by HEAL and answers any participant questions, while also getting some friendly competition and excitement going.
"I think it was great to connect with different team members and get a healthy competition going.”
- Stephanie D., Earth’s Own Employee
Finally, something that makes the HEAL wellness Challenge unique is that the content of the program is curated such that it has something for everyone and feels fresh each week. Regardless of fitness or health level, it’s built so that everyone feels they are gaining new health habits. In fact, all participants reported building new health habits in the four weeks, and Earth’s Own already had a very active and health-forward workforce.
“You have provided me an opportunity to take care of myself.” - Rosielle F., Earth’s Own Employee
In a world that can feel more and more disconnected, 20% of employees report experiencing daily loneliness. Not surprisingly, this statistic is worse for fully remote employees. Most team-building activities for employees are one-off, 1-2 hour events. By spending 4 or 8 weeks with your challenge team, employees can build deeper relationships, ultimately furthering their engagement and loyalty to their organization.
